Author Guidelines

1. Before Submission

Journal Marine Services (JMS) accepts manuscripts in Indonesian or English describing completed maritime-related community engagement and service initiatives. The manuscript must be original, appropriate to the Focus and Scope, and not simultaneously under consideration elsewhere. Authors should consult the current journal template and OJS submission checklist.

The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining approval from every listed author and providing accurate affiliations, contact information, and ORCID iDs (strongly encouraged for all authors).

2. Manuscript Categories

The main category is an Original Community Service Article. A manuscript should report an implemented outreach, training, mentoring, participatory, technology-transfer, or community improvement activity. Alternative categories may be offered only after formally established in JMS's OJS sections and editorial policy.

3. Essential Manuscript Sections

  • Title and authors: a precise description of the intervention, topic, or community setting; verified full names and institutional affiliations; identified corresponding author.
  • Abstract and keywords: a concise account of the need, aim, approach, participants or partners, important observed outcomes, and conclusion. Provide an Indonesian and an English abstract where required by the approved JMS template, with 3–5 meaningful keywords in each language.
  • Introduction: community context, evidence of the problem, partner priorities, relevant scholarship or technical guidance, and clear activity objectives.
  • Implementation Methods: location, dates, partners and beneficiaries, inclusion or selection process where appropriate, preparation, activities, materials or technology, ethical safeguards, and methods for documenting or evaluating outcomes.
  • Results and Discussion: completed activities and measurable or appropriately evidenced outputs, observations or feedback, interpretation, comparison with related service or scientific literature, and alternative explanations.
  • Community Impact and Sustainability: distinguish benefits already observed from anticipated effects; state follow-up arrangements, local ownership, or realistic barriers to sustainability.
  • Conclusion: the program's demonstrated contribution and limits; do not claim benefits that were not evaluated.
  • Acknowledgments and Declarations: author contributions, funding, competing interests, ethics and consent where applicable, data availability, and material AI use.
  • References: sources cited in the article, formatted consistently with the JMS IEEE numerical referencing style, as described below.

4. Evidence and Reporting Standards

Provide sufficient detail to judge the intervention's implementation and relevance. Report participant numbers consistently; distinguish community beneficiaries from organizers or student volunteers. Identify data sources and denominators for percentages. Describe evaluation instruments and the time of measurement. Do not invent pre-intervention scores, follow-up results, or successful prototypes that were never implemented. Photographs are supporting documentation, not substitutes for an evaluation of outcomes.

Where questionnaires, interviews, or photographs involve identifiable people, follow the Research Ethics and Data Availability Policy. Materials that show children or sensitive personal circumstances require additional protections.

5. References: IEEE Numbered Style

JMS uses IEEE-style numbered citations and an IEEE-formatted reference list, as illustrated in its published articles. This differs from the hybrid reference system used by Journal Marine Inside (EJMI).

  • Cite sources using numbers in square brackets: [1], [2], [3].
  • Assign numbers in their order of first appearance; repeat the original number when referring to a previously cited source.
  • Present the reference list in the same numerical order, not alphabetical order.
  • Format authors' initials, quoted article titles, abbreviated or full source titles as required by the adopted IEEE template, publication details, page ranges, and identifiers consistently.
  • Include a working DOI as an https://doi.org/... link when available; verify all online sources and bibliographic data.
  • Use a reference manager with a suitable IEEE citation style and check the final numbering after every revision.

6. Figures, Tables, and Supporting Materials

Use numbered tables and figures, each with an informative caption and a mention in the text. Describe methods for generating charts or measurements. Obtain permission where copyrighted third-party material is reused. Do not publish identifiable participant images unless appropriate permission has been obtained.

7. Double-Anonymous Review Files

Submit an anonymized manuscript for external review where required. Remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments that reveal identity, and identifying file properties from the review version, while supplying complete author metadata in the OJS submission fields. Describe self-cited work neutrally without compromising scholarly attribution.

8. Required Author Declarations

Before acceptance, provide truthful and article-specific statements concerning contributions (CRediT when suitable), funding, competing interests, ethical approval or exemption, informed consent where relevant, data availability, and use of generative AI beyond routine language correction. Missing or incomplete declarations may lead to a revision request.

9. Submission and Editorial Decision

Submit through the JMS Online Journal System. The journal performs initial suitability and ethics screening before any external review. Acceptance is never guaranteed. Submission and publication timing depend on reviewer availability, revision quality, and production readiness. The published record is subject to metadata and PDF quality checks.

10. Template and Formatting

Authors must follow the current JMS template approved by the editorial office for document size, fonts, abstract length, heading styles, margins, and tables. Do not use EJMI's template solely because both journals have the same publisher. The JMS template must be published or linked here after verification.
