Analysis of the Causes of the Grounding of MV Selili Baru in the Siak River Channel

https://doi.org/10.62391/ejmi.v7i2.144This study aims to analyze the causes of the grounding incident involving MV Selili Baru while navigating the Siak River channel, as well as to identify the actions taken by the crew and the preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with the ship’s crew, and documentation such as the ship’s logbook and official reports.
The findings indicate that the grounding incident was caused by a combination of internal and external factors. Internal factors include human error, such as miscalculation of tides and ineffective communication on the bridge. External factors involve strong river currents and the challenging characteristics of the Siak River channel, which is narrow and features sharp bends. Actions taken by the crew included sounding the tanks and river depth, plotting the ship’s position, and checking for leaks in accordance with applicable safety procedures.
Recommended preventive measures include conducting safety meetings before entering the channel, more accurate tidal calculations, and improving crew preparedness for maneuvering in confined waterways. This study is expected to serve as a reference for shipping companies, ship crews, and maritime education institutions in enhancing navigational safety in high-risk river channels.
